Features

As you can see the only thing this refrigerator lacks in is the Energy rating.
Although, 2 star is not very bad. Definitely, it is not the optimum when it comes to saving energy but this is because it has maintained the product at a very affordable price. It is almost 10-15K less than the above two refrigerators with the same features.
The good thing is that it has got all the required features you are looking for. It comes with Auto Defrost, Toughened Glass, Inverter Compressor, LED Lights and a very affordable price tag.
Haier 345 L 3 Star Frost-Free Double-Door Refrigerator (HRB-3654PKG, Black, Glass Finish, Bottom Freezer)
Another stunning looking refrigerator on the list is Haier HRB-3654PKG. It is a double door refrigerator and the first thing that takes on your attention is its built and appearance. You will love it and there is everything to love about this refrigerator. People have voted it more than 4 stars because of its service and quality.

It is a great machine but the thing is that it lacks in one very important feature that we are looking for and that is Inverter Compressor.
It does not have an inverter compressor which makes it less efficient machine when compared to others on the list.
Its compressor also makes a little more noise than others.
However, if you overlook this one little feature then you get every other feature at a very affordable price.
I would recommend this refrigerator to you if you are strict on a budget. If you could afford the others on the list then this is probably not the best choice.
What to look in a Refrigerator Before Buying It?
This is one of the most important aspects of buying anything online and not just the fridge.
It becomes a lot more important when it comes to putting a lot of money into it. So, in this post I also want to teach you the essentials of choosing the best refrigerator for your home.
After all, you must know about the things that you should be looking into a refrigerator before making a decision to buy it… Here’s the list of things that you pay attention to before coming to any decision. It will help you to choose the best product for you and your family 🙂
[bctt tweet=”What to look in a Refrigerator Before Buying It?” username=”vs_shrivastava”]
Let’s begin with the features that you should be looking for in a refrigerator…
Must-Have Features
# 5 In 1 Convertible
You might have seen it in the advertisements how they tend to change the mode of a refrigerator from Normal to Seasonal just with the click of a button. 5 In 1 Convertible is the same feature.
Under this feature, you get 5 different modes that you can switch just with the press of a button. The five modes that it offers are listed below,
Normal Mode
This is actually Normal. It does not do anything else. It keeps the entire upper deck (freezer) cool and lower deck at a pleasant temperature. Look at the image illustration below.
Extra Fridge Mode
This mode, when turned on, converts the freezing area into a normal fridge area by bring down the temperature inside of the freezer.
It is a good feature to have if you need more space for food.
Seasonal Mode
It turns off the freezer completely keeping only the fridge area active in a pleasant mode. This will only be used in order to save electricity on really cool days when you do not need freezer.
If you will look at it from a more practical point of view then you will see that you can keep this feature on for most of the time in regular days as well. I’m sure you do not use freezer normally then what is the use of keeping it on. Use this mode to switch it off and save extra energy.
Vacation Mode
It is direct opposite of the Seasonal Mode. It keeps your freezer turned on and shuts down the entire lower deck. I think this is going to be the least use feature of an average house use.
Home Alone Mode
This mode keeps the entire lower deck switched off and makes your upper deck act like a normal fridge.
As the name suggests, this mode can be used when you live alone. Obviously, you are not going to make use of all that big space inside your fridge. In that case, you can simply switch off the lower deck and keep your food in the upper deck.
It is all about efficiency. Whatever keeps the efficiency level higher is the best.
These modes are nothing more than different temperature settings and control. If you have used a manual refrigerator then you can understand these modes as different settings you make manually. However, these settings are really very handy.
I remember my mom calling my dad everytime she needs to make any alteration to the refrigerator settings. Although it sounds cute when heard first, this could actually become really annoying over time as every time any settings needs be changed my dad has to be present there. With these preset settings, a non-technical person like your great-grandmother can even do it with ease. Also, there is no chance of a bad set as everything is already fixed within the software.
In addition to that, it really helps you to save your time and achieve perfection.
# Inverter Compressor VS Non-Inverter Compressor
I would try my best to explain this technology in the layman’s term.
To begin with, the advantage of using an Inverter Compressor over a simple non-inverter is that it will help you in saving more energy (40-50% energy saving to be precise) as compared to a normal 5 star refrigerator. It is always efficient and economical to use an inverter compressor refrigerator over any other.
Now, if you are interested how this technology works then first you will have to understand the working of a normal non-inverter compressor.
Non-Inverter Compressor
These compressors are being used in almost every 4 star refrigerators. No doubts these compressors are energy efficient but the way they save energy has been improvised in the Inverter compressors and that is what makes all the difference.
In non-inverter compressor, the compressor continuously switches on and off to maintain the set temperature. Suppose, you have set refrigerator temperature at say 8 degree celsius. This will cause compressor to run at full speed until the internal temperature reaches a set number. Once it achieves that temperature , it switch off the compressor. Completely cutting down the power. This way it saves energy.
Now, once the temperature rises above 8 degree celsius, the compressor then starts again at full speed. This continuous start and stop of compressor takes away a lot of energy as it has to get back its inertia everytime it is switched on. This significantly reduces the efficiency of the machine.
In addition to the above problem, the cooling was also getting hurt. The refrigerator has to fluctuate between the temperature instead of keeping it steady in the set temperature. The cooling graph is somewhat like this (shown in Green),
Do you see how the green color line fluctuates through and forth the set temperature. This fluctuation causes the loss of energy and efficiency. Also, non-inverter compressor takes more time to reach the set temperature point when compared to inverter compressor technology.
To remedy such in-efficiency, inverter compressor comes into the picture.
# Inverter Compressor
Okay, so the problem that was taking away the efficiency from the inverter was that it was losing its momentum again and again. In order to start the compressor a lot of energy was being wasted. So, engineers thought of a way to reduce the speed of the compressor instead of cutting it off completely and that is when they invented non-inverter compressor technology.
Now, instead of cutting the compressor completely, the speed of the compressor is reduced gradually with the help of an electronic switch known as the controller. It compares the current temperature outside with the set temperature and decides the speed of the compressor. The slower the compressor rotates the less electricity it requires and the less work it has to do in order to maintain the temperature.
Let’s take a look at the same graph again. As the blue line tries to reach the set point the compressor rotates at its highest speed. This way it reaches the set temperature faster. Once the blue line reaches the set temperature, the controller detects this position and commands the compressor to slow down. It helps the refrigerator to maintain its temperature at the set point.
Again, when the temperature starts to drop the set point, the controller senses it and commands the compressor to speed up a little. This way it maintains its consistency by keeping up with its efficiency. The only time compressor runs at its full speed is when it is first started. Just imagine how much energy it saves in the long run.
This technology is awesome and with every great technology comes a price tag. The only downside of this technology is that you will have to pay 10-12K more money for the same size refrigerator.
But trust me… It is WORTH.
It is 100% worth to pay that money extra and save 50-60% more electricity every time you turn on your refrigerator. And if I’m correct, you keep your refrigerator up 24×7, 365 days of the year. So, this is the only option that you must opt for. This will save you a lot of money in the long run. Plus you will be using the cutting edge technology.
So, now you know about the major difference between inverter refrigerators and non-inverter refrigerators. And I’m sure you will make the right choice.
# Frost Free or Automatic Defrost
Believe it or not, this is one of the most important features of any refrigerator. It increases the lifespan of your refrigerator and also makes it more efficient in the long run.
Have you ever seen the ice getting build up on the tray and freezer sometimes on the doors of the refrigerator?
Well, it is called frost and it is similar to a rust to iron. The frost builds up from the moisture that enters the refrigerator when you open and closes the doors multiple times. It can also take the moisture from the food and vegetables that you keep in and use it to create frost. The excess frost is like a slow poison that kills your refrigerator coils.
Auto defrost can prevent this slow death by preventing the frosted state.
The automatic frost feature heats up the coil from time to time in order to prevent the frost formation. This takes refrigerator to take a little bit more energy than usual but it is all worth. It keeps the fridge frost free and also helps to keep the food fresh.
Its importance is actually more visible when you compare it to a manual frost refrigerator. One fine holiday, you will have to take out all the food out of your fridge. Then you will press the defrost button. The de-frosting will take 6-7 hours to completely defrost the refrigerator. Meanwhile, you will have to keep the food someplace cold in order to prevent it from rotting.
In addition to all that hassle, you will have to do this once every quarter. It is a headache. And frankly speaking who has that much time in today’s world. My advice -> Go with the automatic frost technology. It will save you time and extend the fridge lifespan.
# Internal Lights to See in the Dark
This is a common feature and is available in most of the refrigerators now-a-days. I just want to pinpoint the importance of having internal lights setup (LEDs preferred). You often get up at night and open up the fridge to take out the water bottle or maybe you are too hungry. Whatever it may be the reason, lights are really an important aspect of a refrigerator.
I’m pointing this out because of an incident that happened to me. One evening there was a total cut-off in my street. My refrigerator lights were not working for a long time because we always had lights in that room and we have a separate kitchen so we are not hesitant to lit the light of the room. But, during the cut-off, there was pitch dark. I went in the kitchen to take the water bottle and by mistake, my hand hit the milk jar and it fell on the floor. I still remember my mom shouting at me for it :p but I hope you get the point. Always check for the LEDs in your fridge.
# Door Alarm
Another common but important feature of any refrigerator. It can save you a lotof money.
How?
Well, imagine a situation where you pushed the door of your fridge and moved out of the room without making sure whether it is closed or not. If the door of a refrigerator remains open then your fridge cannot reach a desired temperature. In such situation, the compressor keeps on running in full speed throughout the time. This not only can harm the compressor but also reduces the overall life of the refrigerator. It weakens the coils and wires and throttle as it works continuously for hours in an effort to keep it cool.
Just imagine if a simple door alarm was in place to remind you of such situations. This would save a lot of energy which would have been lost otherwise. So, always make sure that your refrigerator has a Door Alarm.
How to buy a Refrigerator (Money Management Gyan)?
The most important part of purchasing anything is the money management. I have already written a few articles on how to manage your money and why it is important to achieve financial freedom early in your life. You can find those articles in the following link: Finance & Money.
Let’s come to the main topic of discussion. How to buy a Refrigerator?
I have already told you what to look in a refrigerator before purchasing it. Now, to buy a refrigerator or any other goods that cost more than 30K without losing the value of that money requires a little patience from your side. I’m going to tell you the mantra which you can follow in every phase of your life and it will help you to live blissfully.
Mantra- Buy Things on EMI and Invest the Remaining
I know this sounds counter-intuitive but it is a very important lesson when it comes to money management.
Here’s the deal:
You all know that value of money is decreasing over time due to the increasing costs of goods and services. To compensate this increase, thegovernment has to pay more money to the employees. So, at the time you purchased the product the value of that product was high. But you chose to purchase it in instalments. You just extended the period of money repayment to, say 2 years, for which you are ready to pay some interest (15%).
The tricky part:
Inflation is increasing at a rate of 4.9 percent (let’s make it whole at 5%). So, the cost of the same product after 2 years would be:
ONE_YEAR_COST = CURRENT_COST + (CURRENT_COST * 5)/100)
TWO_YEAR_COST = ONE_YEAR_COST + (ONE_YEAR_COST * 5/100)
Let’s say the current price of your refrigerator is 60,000 INR
. After 2 years the same product will cost you approximately 700 INR more (e.g. 60,700 INR). So, the amount that you are going to pay in 2 years is approx. 9000 INR extra (I have not calculated this figure).
Now, Here’s the catch:
The amount that you would have paid directly to buy the refrigerator is 60,000. Now, with the help of EMI you just have to pay 3000, which leave you with 57,000 in hand. You just have to put this money in a safe mutual fund for 2 years.
My knowledge and experience say that you will get at least 12% return. If you wish to take a risk with your money than this percent can even grow up to 20-25%. In addition to that, the rate of interest is compounded in mutual funds. So, every year it keeps on adding to the principal and the amount grows non-linearly.
Let’s quickly calculate how much return you can expect after 2 years…
Now, this is something exciting. If you keep 57,000 INR for 2 years, you accumulate a wealth of 71,500 INR. Subtract your principal amount from your total accumulated wealth and you get 71,500 INR - 57,000 INR = 14,500 INR.
If you remember, you had to pay 9000 INR extra in total. So, let’s quickly subtract the expense from your return and you get 14,500-9000=5500
INR. You actually saved 5500 INR more on your refrigerator. I think that is amazing from your side. Also, you have accumulated a wealth of 71,500. If you do not take out your money this wealth will keep on increasing further at an increased rate and will help you to buy more and more stuff.
Just Remember the Mantra:
